BS Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering 2nd year students went onboard the Saint Peter the Apostle for their 48 hour-Navigational Trip on August 26-28,2011.
Saint Peter is a passenger vessel of Negros Navigation Co., Inc. traveling Bacolod-Manila and vice versa. Negros Navigation Co., Inc. had been accommodating and assisting VMA their ship familiarization program.
During trip, 3/M Alvin Cloyd Pelias, 3/M Christopher Aborde, 3/M Melmar Surban adn 3/E Aaron Belacho, Shipboard Training Officers of NN Oceanic Institute took turns in orienting and touring the students around the ship. They also showed off the ship's equipment for life saving, fire fighting and navigation. An examination was given afterwards.
The Cadets and cadette were then assigned to render two hours of duty on the bridge for the deck and in the engine room for engine department. Despite the rough sea condition during the voyage, the cadets did not falter to do their respective duties onboard. "It was a great experience having hands-on practice on the actual equipment that are used onboard the vessel especially applying our knowledge just like the basics in terrestrial navigation, deck watch keeping and seamanship. " I feel inspired and as well as excited for the future profession I've chosen", said Ortega, one of the cadets who rendered two-hour duty.
The students also had their leisure time onboard. They were given access to videoke singing and arcade games. 2/M Julio Estrellanes and 2/E Rafael Dusaban were the faculty who accompanied the students.
